Hear what the philanthropist said
Landlord, we're in need of a new flask of wine
Also, fetch one more loaf of bread
Destiny will play with men
Phantom figures all
Feeble pieces on the board
Waiting for their call
How little while have we got to stay here
How little mercy to be in these skins
Soaking the sand I once came like water
Rustling through leaves soon I'll go like the wind
Since a stone cannot move
You may pity the stubborn rock
Though for aeons it stood every test
See the small apple tree
Which is nourished by my remains
Grows a branch for a blackbird to rest
Light-hearted - our gaze at the end of the world
Still we're only pawns in the game
Trying to make the most of the distance ahead
Drink! For you don't know whence you came
Instruments in resonance
Played by my good friends
Merry with the fruitful grape
Till the soul ascends
