What was a minor key elation until I had just turned sixteen
Became a life-bending sensation when the original bird hit the scene
They like to sing their invitations to join the dance party, kiss and touch
Trying to resist such a temptation will not amount to much
Every single weekend at the festival of the birds – exhilarating
I'm your distant cousin, archaeopteryx, barely gliding on ancient wings
Bide your time when courting various mockingbirds, buying diamond rings
So climb the scale of blue notes leading up in a spiral into my bedroom
The first at rising every morning, the early girl catches the worm
There's not much action in the evening
until the late bird comes catching the sperm
I always told my friend the robin he played his Swallows and Crows too loud
You'll hear that sound over the cellphone of Robert Franklin Stroud
When his wife's not looking my canary acts cheekily – he's quite flirtatious
Hear me swear at sparrows who will never eat
what I offer them, walnut chunks
Crossing mighty rivers on a lily pad, toucan close at hand
I've lately started preaching to the birds in the trees like Francis the Saint did
It wasn't much, no revelation, a troglodyte banging on a trunk
But led to deeper exploration of the chaconne and the doo-wop and funk
The art of whole-hearted expression
may even leave the listener feeling dwarfed
Improvisations by a blackbird and Albert Mangelsdorff
