Die Grundidee dieses Stücks entstammt seiner Symphonie Nr. 40, g-moll, KV 550. Er komponierte sie im Juli 1788 in Wien. Nach der Alten Mozart-Ausgabe trägt die Symphonie, seine vorletzte, die Nummer 40 und zählt heutzutage zu den beliebtesten und meistgespielten Orchesterwerken des Komponisten.
