As long as it's news, we are extremely shocked by the incidents and the pictures. People are drowning, because the situation in their home countries is so desperate, that they are willing to risk their life to get out. But bit by bit we get used to the pictures and the stories. And eventually it's not even news any more, it's just the regular thing that happens somewhere far away.
And why don't these people just stay in their countries? They don't have to step into these boats, don't they? How can some be so irresponsible the put their families and children in such a risky situation?
A friend of ours opened my eyes to the reality these people face. A reality I had worked so hard to ignore and trivialize. He and his family had to face war of the ugliest kind and devastation in Syria. His brother died, when walking past a hospital, when it was attacked just that moment in a rocket assault. He himself became a victim of electric torture after demonstrating for human rights and in another occasion had just left the grocery store around the corner of his home, when yet another rocket completely destroyed the place, killed the owner, whom he had just talked to, himself being was just about fifty meters away. How lucky would he and his family be the next time.
So eventually it's no a question of risking ones life on an irresponsible trip versus staying home safe. It's potential death one way of the other. And you are forced to take a decision for yourself and your beloved ones, whether you like it or not.
And if things go bad ... it's you, that is responsible in the end and it's you, that has to live with the guilt for the rest of your life.
